Cancer is a group of many diseases in which certain cells within the body lose their ability to regulate cell division. The cancerous cell multiplies uncontrollably, causing other normal cells to be crowded out and destroyed. If this growth takes place in a vital organ, malfunctions and death can result. Although cancer is primarily a disease of older age, it is the major cause of death in children between the ages of 3 and 14. Because its symptoms are often subtle, childhood cancer is often difficult to detect. The three main cancer therapies have diminished the death rate for childhood cancer therefore the issue for many children and young teenagers with cancer is no longer dying of the disease but living with it. It has been researched that pediatric cancer has a drastic effect on the growth of a young person in terms of both emotional and psychological development. While children often live long lives with cancer diagnosed at a young age, the effects can be devastating.
